Accountant / Senior Accountant

Role/level will depend on experience

Apnimed is pre-commercial pharmaceutical company working to transform the treatment of sleep apnea based on a simple idea – patients with obstructive sleep apnea could benefit from treatment with a safe and effective oral medication dosed once daily at bedtime. Our lead development program targets the neurologic control of upper airway muscles to maintain an open airway during sleep. Based in Cambridge, Mass., Apnimed is conducting cutting-edge research and committed to innovation, as well as state-of-the-art advancements in sleep medicine, which is leading to the development of a portfolio of novel pharmacologic therapies for sleep apnea and related disorders. Of note, the Boston Business Journal has also voted Apnimed as one of the Best Places to Work in 2024 and 2025!

 

We are seeking an Accountant/Senior Accountant to play a key role in our monthly close process, general ledger management, and evolving public-company–ready financial operations. This individual will prepare and review journal entries, manage accruals, support SOX internal controls, and assist with the preparation of draft financial statements. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting skills, a public accounting foundation, and experience working within or alongside high-growth companies approaching an IPO. Biotech/pharma industry experience is strongly preferred.This is an excellent role for a self-starter who enjoys problem-solving, improving processes, and operating with a high degree of ownership.

 

Key Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

Monthly Close & Accounting Operations

  • Prepare monthly journal entries, including complex accruals, prepaids, and stock-based compensation support
  • Prepare monthly joint venture and equity-method accounting journal entries
  • Maintain an accurate open purchase order listing to support monthly accruals and ensure timely, accurate cutoff of expenses
  • Perform general ledger account reconciliations and tie-outs to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Support timely preparation of month-end close deliverables and close calendar execution
  • Assist in preparing draft financial statements and supporting documentation for management review

Controls, Compliance & Reporting

  • Assist with SOX compliance activities, including documentation and execution of internal controls
  • Maintain audit-ready workpapers and support interim/annual audits
  • Contribute to IPO-readiness activities, including process improvements, policy development, and financial reporting enhancements

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Problem Solving

  • Partner with FP&A, Commercial, Clinical Operations, CMC, and other teams to validate accruals and understand business drivers
  • Identify issues, analyze variances, and recommend process improvements
  • Support the implementation and effective use of NetSuite and other financial systems

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, including public accounting experience
  • Experience with IPO preparation or public-company financial processes
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, accruals, and month-end close
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities with strong analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Excel, including advanced functions and macros
  • Experience preparing or supporting draft financial statements

 

Preferred

  • Biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience (strong preference)
  • NetSuite experience
  • Exposure to stock-based compensation accounting (a plus)
  • Experience with SOX controls in a public-company or pre-IPO environment
